Samford University is located in Homewood, a suburb in Birmingham, Alabama. It was founded in 1841, as Howard College and it was first located in Marion. In 1895, the university admitted female students and in 1913 it officially became a mixed educational institution. In 1953 on June 11, Howard College moved in Shades Valley, located south of Birmingham and in 1957 it was relocated on its present site. Howard College turned into a university on November 9, 1965 and it was named after Frank Park Samford, the most generous benefactor of the university, in that period.
Today, Samford University includes the School of Business, School of Performing Arts, Howard College of Arts and Sciences, Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies, McWhorter School of Pharmacy, Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, Cumberland School of Law and Beeson School of Divinity. It is offering various majors and degrees, including family studies, fine arts and environmental science.
